- What is Pharmacogenetics? -
Pharmacogenetics is the examination of DNA to estimate how quickly drugs are broken down by the body. The goal is to determine the correct dosage per person, based on a DNA profile: Customized Medication.
- Breaking down of medicines -
Medicines are broken down in the liver. The body does that to protect against foreign substances. The concentration of drugs in the blood is determined by the prescribed dose and how fast the body breaks down these drugs. The risk of side effects as well as the effectiveness of a drug are often linked to a correct blood level.
When prescribing medicines it is assumed that everyone breaks down drugs at the same speed (metabolization). However, thats not the case: the amount of enzymes that take care of this process are not the same for everyone. Heredity plays an important role in this. A DNA test can show which enzymes someone does or doesn’t have.
- How to apply? -
Via specialist, GP or possibly pharmacist. Don’t forget to mention the AGB code on the application! The results can be determined by blood or cheek mucosa. At the nearest
blood collection lab, blood can be taken and sent together with the application form to Erasmus MC.
